Why Research Belongs in Real-World Care Environments
Real-world research environments extend beyond traditional academic study sites to include community-based programs, schools, and other care settings where patients seek and receive support. By strengthening these environments with appropriate research infrastructure, providers can capture the full complexity of illness—generating empirical data that reflect clinical insight, real-world functional outcomes, biological samples, and data collected from organically diverse cohorts—including populations historically underserved or difficult to reach through traditional research models.
Collecting biospecimens alongside clinical and functional data—and repeating these measurements over time—makes it possible to link molecular signals, clinical presentation, and real-world functioning, producing the deeply characterized phenotypes needed to advance precision medicine discovery in mental health.
Looking Ahead
Insights emerging from this work are informing the development of PM4MH (Precision Medicine for Mental Health), an emerging nonprofit initiative focused on building the shared research infrastructure needed to accelerate biological discovery in mental health.
